Essential Insights on Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery can significantly enhance both appearance and confidence. At Ford Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we recognize the importance of making informed decisions about this transformative procedure. Regardless of your reasons – cosmetic, health, or something else entirely – you should be informed of the different ways breast augmentation is performed, the potential risks, and what to expect from the results. To that end, here’s all you need to know about breast augmentation surgery.
What Happens During Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation is a medical procedure aimed at enhancing the breast size and shape, typically using implants. The field has seen major advancements since the 1960s, when silicone implants were first introduced. The procedure can be done in one hour and is performed as an outpatient surgery, allowing for a fairly quick recovery.
Implants come in different forms. Silicone gel implants closely mimic natural breast tissue, while saline implants, filled with sterile salt water, offer adjustable volume. The silicone implants of today are highly studied and tested and are very safe. The properties of the silicone gel have evolved greatly over the years, and today’s gel implants are considered “cohesive” or more “form stable” while still being soft and life-like. This means that in the event of an implant rupture, the gel does not bleed out into your tissues. Implants come in round and teardrop shape, smooth and textured surfaces, and a variety of different profiles (from low to extra high) to cater to different aesthetic preferences. In collaboration with Dr. Chiasson, a patient’s anatomy and goals will help determine the ideal implant to select. It is possible to create a more “athletic” look, a “mystery” look (did she or didn’t she have implants?), or a highly augmented look. Some implants will hold their shape as you move and maintain optimal fullness at the top, whereas others will change shape with body movements to more closely mimic natural breast tissue. Typically, Dr. Chiasson will select a range of breast implant sizes for your surgery, based on your anatomy and your goals (or “wish pics”), and then during the procedure, a few sizes will be available to select the absolute best one for your frame and desired aesthetic result.
Surgical techniques have evolved as well. Options like the inframammary incision (beneath the breast), periareolar incision (around the nipple), and transaxillary incision (through the armpit) provide different risks and benefits, which Dr. Chiasson will discuss with you. Implants may be placed above or below the chest muscle and may sometimes be combined with a mesh or material for additional soft tissue support (sometimes called an “internal bra”). The choice depends on factors such as implant type, patient anatomy, and Dr. Chiasson’s recommendations.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
For women with smaller or deflated breasts, a breast augmentation can remarkably boost self-esteem and body image. Many individuals find that their enhanced appearance positively influences personal and professional aspects of their lives. In cases of reconstructive surgery after breast cancer, implants can restore a natural look and feel to the breast, aiding in emotional recovery and improving overall quality of life.

Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
Preparing for breast augmentation surgery helps improve your outcomes and prepare you for what’s about to happen. Things typically start with a comprehensive pre-operative plan that includes medical and lifestyle evaluations. You’ll need to schedule a thorough medical examination to assess your overall health and identify any potential concerns that could affect surgery. This may include blood tests, imaging studies, and a medical history review. All women over age 40 are strongly encouraged to have a preoperative screening mammogram.
It’s advised that you take steps like refraining from smoking, alcohol, and certain medications like blood thinners, as these can all compromise you during surgery. You will also need to prepare mentally for surgery and recovery. Having a therapist, counselor, or trusted friend to confide in can make the process much easier.
Finally, post-operative care and support should be arranged. Having someone assist you during the initial recovery can significantly affect your comfort and healing process, which means better recovery and better results.
